Facial Routine

As a sufferer of acne, it is très important that I have a regular and improved regimen. After years of testing each new product and figuring out what works best to defeat awful breakouts (that turn into lifelong acne scars) I’ve found something that seems to work well for me.

Currently, I’m not on any dermatologist prescribed acne wash, cream or moisturizer. I have yet to find one that suits my skin’s needs. The only medicines I take from a dermatologist are birth control and Accutane. Accutane works for its patients, but it just takes time. So let’s make this a success story, shall we? Until then, let me just tell you what didn’t work for me.

  • PanOxyl

  • Arbonne facial care

  • Murad

  • Zapzyt

  • AcneFree

  • Clean & Clear products (never works for true acne suffers)

  • Neutrogena products (RT ^)

  • Aveeno Products (RT^)

  • Proactive

  • Benzoyl peroxide face wash

  • Salicylic acid face wash

  • Differin

  • Tazorac

  • Tetracycline

  • Doxycycline

  • Minocycline (turned mine and my sister’s gums and teeth blue)

  • Contraception pills

  • Amoxicillin

  • Clindamycin

  • Azelex

  • Spironolactone

that clearly did not work—see the bit of face

shown in the photo.

After all that, it’s understandable that I’ve gotten fed up and resorted to the “big dog” of acne medicines: Accutane. While I’m living with Accutane for the next six months, I’m making many changes to my daily routine—everything from ethical and personal choices to health related ones. My routine now has become very simplified, as requested by my dermatologist.

  • CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin

  • Cerave also provides an alternate face wash for those with oily skin, but as I have dry skin ontop of the severely drying Accutane prescription, I figured the dry skin was the best way to go.

  • CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

  • I prefer the tub to the pump version of this. The tub is much thicker and helps with severely dry skin. The pump version works nicely, but is slightly thinner.

  • Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

  • This works wonders—AND it doesn’t have to be prescribed. $17 at Ulta for a very simple and effective spot treatment while I’m living without a topical prescription from my doctor. I swear by this product.

I suggest this regimine for anyone who’s going through what I am. 14 years dealing with a dermatologist monthly has really helped me figure out what works and what doesn’t.

With all the positive things I'm hearing about Accutane's results, I suggest just skipping to Accutane right away.
